Thrush Treatment

I trimmed Arabee's feet over the weekend - they look great. I may or may not post the pictures I took....we'll see how ambitious I get!

Jack, on the other hand.....well, his frogs are in terrible shape. I need immediate thrush treatment on his feet, and it needs to be effective!

First, I need to start cleaning out his hooves daily, or twice daily, no exceptions. Typically, after a trim I start out good the first week or two, then forget the daily hoof cleanings. Daily hoofpicking is a must.

Second, I'm hoping to find a "safe" thrush treatment I can apply to his hooves. I don't want to use a harsh chemical since I'm pregnant, but his thrush has gotten to the point that it NEEDS attention. Has anyone tried anything that they recommend? I'll be doing an internet search later on, but would love to hear suggestions if anyone else has tried something that works well.

My husband does borax soaks. Check some of the natural hoof sites for info. My mind is thinking that one of the hoof gurus has an anti thrush paste they mix up, and push into the crevice of the frog.

Thanks! Maybe you're thinking of "Pete's Goo", a 50/50 mixture of triple antibiotic ointment and human athlete's foot cream. I just looked several treatments up and that was one of them. I'll probably end up combining twice daily hoof picking with a soak and some of that "Goo".

Well, it's a bit harsh, but if you do outside, you should be fine...just pure bleach. I was a vet tech for years, and the vets actually gave the "little known secret" of bleach for thrush and rain-rot fungus. Clean the hoof, pour on the bleach full strength. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, and rinse it off good. One treatment always took care of us, but if it is particularly bad, then you might need to do it every day for 2-3 days. If your horse has good feet otherwise, he'll recover well. If not, I would also recommend applying a hoof conditioner to the hoof wall (after rinsing and drying) to re-condition where the bleach makes contact. Good luck.

Hope you're able to get his thrush all cleared up. Would hubby be able to apply some stuff for you? Iodine is one of the main ingredients in Thrush Buster - maybe you could do Epsom salt and Bedadine soaks?
